Argentinean Anthem

Approved by the Assembly on 11 May 1813, was written by Vicente López y Planes and music owned by Blas Parera. It was first performed at the home of Mariquita Sanchez de Thompson on May 14, 1813.

In 1900, during the presidency of Julio Argentino Roca a Decree provides that in the holidays, schools and colleges only sing the first and last quartet and choir, with the intention of maintaining harmony in coexistence with the Spanish residents in the country and Spain.

The following is the modern version of the lyrics, adopted in 1924.

Oíd, mortales, el grito sagrado:
“¡libertad, libertad, libertad!”
Oíd el ruido de rotas cadenas,
ved en trono a la noble igualdad.

Ya su trono dignísimo abrieron
las Provincias Unidas del Sud
y los libres del mundo responden:
“Al gran pueblo argentino, ¡salud!
Al gran pueblo argentino, ¡salud!”
Y los libres del mundo responden:
“Al gran pueblo argentino, ¡salud!”

Estribillo

Sean eternos los laureles
que supimos conseguir,
que supimos conseguir.
Coronados de gloria vivamos…
